From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' epic sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim. When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are piloted by an international crew of soldiers in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee-team up to pilot a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger on a mission to halt the mounting apocalypse. Pacific Rim: Man, Machines & Monsters chronicles the production of the film with stunning concept art, captivating photography, and cast and crew descriptions of the shoot.
In books such as these where there’s so strong an emphasis on the visuals, the words on the page can sometimes come across like a hastily-scribbled afterthought. But under the steady hand of Variety writer/editor David Cohen, the text positively crackles. The imagery may transport you to another world, but Cohen’s intelligent writing makes for an entertaining tour guide. …. (Pacific Rim) is a movie that splashes multi-million dollars worth of love up onto the big screen. The great gift of David Cohen’s luscious Man, Machines, & Monsters is that it captures every ounce of that heart.

Not only should this book be held up as how you do a companion book from concept to realisation, but it should also serve as a master class on how every such book that follows should be written. The book is THAT good.

What a fantastic book. …. Man, Machines & Monsters is a book that you experience rather than read.

There are numerous books to support the release of blockbuster movies but this one is absolutely fantastic and really sets the bar higher than ever before. ... If Pacific Rim sounds like your kind of movie then this companion book is unmissable.
David S. Cohen provides a great tone as the writer of Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, and Monsters, kicking the book off with an engaging prologue on when Pacific Rim was first introduced to the public at San Diego Comic-Con 2012. … After uproarious approval by the Comic-Con crowd, the mood is set to dive into the inner workings of the film. From the pilots (and actors) that control the Jaegers, to the war machines themselves, Kaiju creation, set designs and beyond, Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, and Monsters covers it all in riveting detail. … The entire book is extremely polished and well-written. I had this wide fanboy grin on my face all while digesting the awesomeness of Pacific Rim: Man, Machines, and Monsters.

..when I was offered the chance to review this book I was majorly excited but does this book live up to my lofty expectations? Well, the answer to that is that not only does this book live up to the expectations, it damn well shatters them in to tiny pieces. …. I can't really class this book as anything other than essential. It's a truly brilliant book that will positively delight fans and people that just want to see how a stunningly beautiful movie was made.
It's a great book. … packed with amazing content … The commentary is excellent. There's plenty to read about the characters, the designs of the Jaegers and Kaijus, and many stories on the production process. … This is a fantastic art and companion book to the movie. One of my 2013 favorites. Highly recommended.

David S. Cohen has been writing for Variety for over 10 years and is the author of The Ballad of Rango: The Art & Making of an Outlaw Film, which is another great companion book. … Some of the art in the book might be considered to be a bit of a spoiler since all of the monsters and robots are not show in the trailers but I couldn’t care less, I loved every page of this book and now I just want to see the film more!
